Bucharest's Key Metro Line Delayed, Construction Not Expected Before 2028

Bucharest's dream of a significantly expanded metro system faces yet another prolonged delay. The highly anticipated Section Eroilor - Universitate - Piața Iancului of Metro Line 5, which promises to connect western districts directly to the city center, is now looking at a start date no earlier than 2028. Metrorex, the city's metro operator, has confirmed that although the design phase is finalized, the labyrinthine process of acquiring essential permits, including the Urbanistic Zoning Plan and the Environmental Accord, will stretch through the end of 2027. This bureaucratic hurdle means the tender for construction works cannot even be launched until after these approvals are secured. Given that construction itself is projected to take seven years, residents might not see this vital link operational until 2035 or even 2036. This latest setback, detailed in a response to 'Adevărul', follows a series of shifting timelines that have consistently pushed back the project's completion, much to the frustration of commuters. While the completion of design work is a positive step, the extended wait for permits and subsequent construction highlights the systemic challenges facing major infrastructure projects in Romania, often leaving citizens wondering when these essential services will finally materialize.
