Bucharest's Unirii Square faces major traffic restrictions for construction

Bucharest's Unirii Square will experience significant traffic disruptions starting Wednesday, May 27, 2026, as authorities implement temporary restrictions. The closure affects one lane near the square's fountains, specifically the direction from Parliament towards the National Library. This measure is necessary for ongoing rehabilitation and consolidation work on the covering slab of the Dâmbovița River. Traffic flow will be rerouted to the right side of the square, away from the Central Fountain and towards Alba Iulia Square. The Sector 4 Mayor's office is managing the construction project, which involves installing piles and other specific tasks. Mayor Daniel Băluță stated on Facebook that the measure, approved by the PMB Traffic Commission, will not significantly impact overall traffic and allows construction crews to proceed with their work. Work on the Unirii Slab began in June of last year, with the first phase near Hanul lui Manuc already completed. The project also includes work on the pipe system. The overall completion deadline for the Unirii Slab project is set for the summer of 2027. Drivers are advised to exercise increased caution in the area, adhere to temporary signage, and follow the directions of traffic officers.
