Bucharest Teams Dominate Romanian Football League After 14-Year Hiatus

The Romanian SuperLiga is witnessing a significant resurgence of its traditional powerhouses, with Bucharest-based teams reclaiming the top three spots in the league standings for the first time in 14 years. This marks a nostalgic return to form for clubs with rich histories in Romanian football.

Dinamo Bucharest, one of the capital's most storied clubs with 18 league titles, has ascended to the top of the table, a position it last held in August 2015. The team's president, Andrei Nicolescu, expressed pride in the team's unity and growing understanding of the game, while cautioning that much work remains. "The first place after six rounds is a reason for joy, not a verdict," he stated, emphasizing the ongoing process of building a cohesive unit.

This dominance by Bucharest teams, Dinamo, FCSB, and Rapid, is a notable shift. While FCSB has enjoyed recent success, Rapid has navigated a more challenging path, having been refounded a decade ago and climbing back to the elite division in 2021. The league also sees other historically significant clubs like Universitatea Craiova and FC Argeș performing strongly.

Universitatea Craiova, in particular, has recaptured its former glory, securing a league title, its first since 1991, and completing a domestic "triple" by winning the Romanian Cup and Super Cup. FC Argeș is also performing well, currently occupying a playoff spot, continuing its strong showing from the previous season. The league's current landscape reflects a blend of resurgent traditional clubs and competitive play.
