Budapest Airport Reports Stable Fuel Supply Amid European Aviation Concerns

As Europe's aviation sector braces for potential turbulence due to fuel shortages, Hungary's travel industry is adopting a wait-and-see approach. Judit Molnár, president of the Association of Hungarian Travel Agencies (MUISZ), stated that while charter flight orders are on hold, there have been no cancellations thus far. Agencies are hopeful that the fuel supply situation will resolve itself by the summer peak season.

This cautious optimism comes amidst warnings from industry leaders like Willie Walsh, CEO of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Walsh has cautioned that Europe could face flight cancellations starting in late May due to a scarcity of aircraft fuel, a problem already emerging in parts of Asia. IATA stresses the need for coordinated contingency plans, including slot relief, should restrictions become necessary.

In contrast, Budapest Airport Zrt. reports a stable fuel supply situation at Liszt Ferenc International Airport. Partners have not indicated any issues, and no significant flight cancellations have been observed. The airport is actively exploring ways to increase its current 4-5 day fuel storage capacity, a measure that could bolster resilience against future supply chain disruptions. Budapest Airport has a history of managing similar challenges by implementing rapid measures and collaborating with airlines to ensure continuous operations.

The charter flights will start in June, so in the second half of May, towards the end of the month, a more reliable picture can be obtained as to whether there will be cancellations or consolidations, but there is no sign of this yet.
