Buenos Aires to honor late Supreme Court Justice Carmen Argibay with memorial space

Buenos Aires lawmakers are moving forward with plans to establish a memorial space dedicated to the late Supreme Court Justice Carmen Argibay. The proposed "Paseo Carmen María Argibay" will be situated in Plaza Lavalle, directly opposite the Palace of Justice, and will feature a bust, a sculpture, and commemorative plaques.

The project, which received initial approval on May 14, was introduced by legislator Matías López and supported by various bloc leaders. The Association of Women Judges of Argentina (AMJA) convened a public hearing, drawing magistrates, officials, and academics from across the country. Participants celebrated Argibay's enduring legacy as a symbol of judicial independence, commitment to human rights, intellectual honesty, and the promotion of gender equality within the judiciary.

Legislator Silvia Lospennato welcomed attendees, emphasizing Argibay's significant influence on contemporary Argentine justice. She highlighted Argibay's integrity, her advocacy for human rights, and her persistent efforts to achieve gender equality. Lospennato also noted Argibay's extensive national and international judicial and academic career.

AMJA Vice President Marcela De Langhe expressed gratitude to the legislators sponsoring the project. She explained the symbolic significance of the chosen location: "The promenade bearing her name faces the Palace of Justice. Carmen will look towards the seat of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation. She will look towards the place where she exercised her magistracy with bravery and extraordinary intellectual honesty."

De Langhe added that this gaze "will silently recall a reality that challenges our institutions: there were women on that Court, and today there are none. I say this without reproach, as a simple statement of fact. This will not be a monument looking nostalgically at the past, but a permanent invitation to build the future. It will remind us that equality is never a final conquest, but a daily task that demands commitment and perseverance." She concluded by stating that the project embodies a profound republican spirit, reaffirming a commitment to independent judicial function, intellectual honesty, and human-centered decision-making.
