Building Structure Collapse in Jelgava Claims a Life

Tragic incidents unfolded across Latvia as building structure collapses and storm-related events led to fatalities and injuries. In Jelgava, a person lost their life when parts of a building's structure gave way. Emergency services freed the individual from the debris and handed them over to the National Health Service (NMPD), but medical personnel pronounced them dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, the Aizkraukles municipality reported a separate incident where a person was struck by a falling tree. In the Bauska municipality, a firefighter sustained injuries while engaged in clearing storm aftermath. This firefighter was also transferred to the NMPD for medical attention.

The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) reiterated its urgent appeal to residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary outdoor travel. Spokesperson Viktorija Gribuste highlighted the extreme difficulties faced by emergency services in reaching those in need due to fallen trees obstructing roadways. "At times, on the road, there are fallen trees every twenty meters," she noted, emphasizing that roads must be cleared before rescue operations can proceed effectively.
