Bulls of the Virgin: Centuries of Faith, Tradition, and Popular Devotion

For centuries, the "Los Toros de la Virgen" (The Bulls of the Virgin) procession has been a vibrant display of faith and tradition in Higüey, Dominican Republic. Every August 14, devotees bring bulls from Bayaguana and Hato Mayor to Higüey, honoring a promise made in 1691.

I had many problems during my pregnancy and I entrusted myself to the Mother, because I had already lost my first pregnancy. My daughter is now 11 years old.

That year, Spanish soldiers prayed to the Virgen de la Altagracia for intervention against invading French forces. Their victory led the local ranchers to pledge an annual offering of cattle. Today, the procession, guided by members of the Dominican Army, sees thousands of people, young and old, on foot and horseback, unite in celebration of their devotion.

Many participants share personal stories of miracles attributed to the Virgin. Ana Peralta credits her 11-year-old daughter's survival to the Virgin's intercession during a difficult pregnancy. Similarly, Inés recounted how a prayer to the Virgin eased a severe breast condition, which she believes prevented cancer.

I felt a problem in my breasts about seven years ago. It hurt. And I said: 'Virgin of La Altagracia, as long as you ask God and your Son not to give me breast cancer, I promise to visit you every August 14.' And everything went away.

For the people of Higüey, the procession is a source of immense pride, showcasing their deep faith and connection to God. Alberto, a lifelong resident, emphasized the community's unwavering support for this cherished tradition, highlighting it as a testament to the town's strong spiritual identity.
