The events depicted in "Bully" unfolded on July 14, 1993, in South Florida. Bobby Kent, then 20 years old, was murdered. The perpetrators included his best friend, Marty Puccio, Puccio's girlfriend Lisa Connelly, and five other associates who had witnessed or experienced Kent's persistent bullying. Puccio later confessed to authorities that Kent had subjected him to years of physical, verbal, and sexual abuse.

Before confessing, Puccio had confided in his girlfriend, Lisa Connelly, about Kent's abuse. Despite Kent's outwardly polite demeanor towards adults, his destructive behavior towards his peers created a volatile environment.
