Bundesliga: Bayern frustrated by Schalke and Loris Karius

Jamal Musiala returned to action without incident, but that was about the only good news for Bayern Munich in Gelsenkirchen. The German champions were held to a goalless draw by promoted Schalke 04, with goalkeeper Loris Karius keeping them at bay.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany rested Michael Olise and Harry Kane before Thursday's Champions League opener against FK Bodø/Glimt. Michael Olise and Kane began on the bench, while Ismael Saibari and Lennart Karl started. Bayern still controlled the match, but their attacking threat diminished. Karl's long-range effort caused Karius no trouble in the third minute, and a deflected Nathaniel Brown shot also failed to beat the Schalke goalkeeper.

Schalke competed fiercely in the challenges, although the hosts created little going forward. Kompany introduced Kane at the break, then sent on Olise and Musiala in the 57th minute. The game became an increasingly defensive battle, with Schalke coach Miron Muslić's side standing firm. Fans at the Veltins-Arena celebrated every successful challenge like a goal. Bayern rarely threatened inside the penalty area, and Karius turned Kane's long-range shot over the bar in the 87th minute.

After the final whistle, Bayern protested that the stadium clock showed a different time from referee Robert Schröder's watch. The referee's time was correct. Bayern could end the matchday in fourth place, while Freiburg led Dortmund and Elversberg.
