Burgenland Governor Doskozil returns to public life after larynx removal

Burgenland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil has returned to public life after undergoing larynx removal surgery in April. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Doskozil revealed he now uses a voice prosthesis, which has resulted in a deeper voice and significantly improved his breathing. Before the operation, he struggled with breathing, impacting his ability to engage in activities like sports. Now, he is planning a cycling tour for the autumn, aiming to do it without an e-bike.

Doskozil described the decision to remove his larynx as "no easy decision," as he was uncertain about the outcome and the potential for regaining his voice. He explained that some patients recover their voice quickly with a prosthesis, while others do not. Following the surgery, he was forbidden from speaking for two months. A check-up in early June confirmed everything was in order, and he began speech therapy, which he continues weekly. He emphasized that daily speaking is the best form of training.

He expressed satisfaction with his progress, noting that he can handle office appointments, even intensive ones. He also shared that he has been following political developments and has been "annoyed" by many issues, particularly federal health policy. He warned again about hospital closures. While he hasn't considered leaving politics, his focus was on regaining his ability to speak and continue his work. He currently has no federal political ambitions.
