Burkina Faso warns of malaria surge with rainy season onset

As Burkina Faso enters its rainy season, health authorities are warning of a resurgence in malaria cases and urging heightened protective measures for children.

The return of the rainy season typically correlates with an increase in mosquito populations, the primary vectors for malaria. Health officials are emphasizing the critical importance of preventative actions to combat the disease, which remains a leading cause of health consultations, hospitalizations, and deaths in the country.

One of the key recommendations is the widespread use of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets, particularly for children during sleep. This measure directly targets mosquito bites, which are most frequent during the night.

In addition to personal protection, the authorities are also calling for improved environmental hygiene. This includes the disposal of potential mosquito breeding grounds, such as old tires and other stagnant water containers, to reduce the overall mosquito population in communities. The adage "prevention is better than cure" is being invoked to encourage widespread adoption of these preventive gestures.
