Burnt-Out Wrecks: Unprecedented Fire Devastates Cars Near Omiš, Croatia

Devastating scenes of destruction have emerged from the area near Omiš, Croatia, following a severe wildfire that ravaged the region. The extent of the damage is particularly evident in the dozens of vehicles left as burnt-out husks, many unrecognizable with only parts of their bodywork remaining.

Our reporter's footage shows cars stripped of their roofs and windows, stark reminders of the fire's intensity. These vehicles were abandoned by their owners as they fled the encroaching flames, driven by a powerful bora wind that pushed the fire towards Omiš overnight. The blaze consumed houses, vehicles, boats, and other structures, leaving a trail of devastation.

Fire officials described the event as unprecedented in their careers. The fire scorched approximately 1,000 hectares, with a perimeter exceeding 20 kilometers. Firefighting forces are expected to remain in the area for days to monitor and prevent any resurgence of the flames. The material damage is still being assessed but is already considered immense.

Beyond the extensive material losses, the fire has had a tragic human toll. One body was found at the scene, and dozens of people sustained injuries. Reception centers were opened in Omiš, Dugi Rat, Makarska, and Split to accommodate around 150 evacuated individuals at one point. Numerous firefighting units from various Croatian counties, along with four Canadair water-dropping aircraft, were deployed to combat the blaze.
