Burundian President consults with DRC political and religious actors

Burundian President and current African Union Chairperson, Evariste Ndayishimiye, engaged in consultations with a delegation from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Monday, July 7, in Bujumbura.

The Congolese delegation comprised leaders from opposition political parties and prominent religious organizations. Their discussions focused on the prevailing political, security, and institutional tensions within the DRC.

President Ndayishimiye expressed satisfaction with the open and trusting nature of the exchanges. He underscored the critical need for constructive dialogue and unity to foster stability, peace, and security in the DRC and the wider region. The Burundian presidency noted on its X account that Ndayishimiye recognized a shared commitment to these goals during the discussions.

However, the C64 opposition coalition conveyed a singular message: the constitution cannot be altered. In addition to the C64 coalition, President Ndayishimiye also held separate meetings with representatives from the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO), the Church of Christ in Congo (ECC), and the Platform of Religious Confessions and Churches of the Awakening in the DRC.
