Bus conductor stabs Lagos traffic agency officer during enforcement

An official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is in stable condition after being stabbed with a screwdriver by a bus conductor during a traffic enforcement operation. The incident took place on Monday at Ile-Epo Market along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The officer was carrying out his statutory responsibility of ensuring unobstructed vehicular movement and maintaining order on Lagos roadways.

According to LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the confrontation began when a LASTMA patrol team stopped a commercial Volkswagen bus for obstructing traffic. The driver reportedly resisted the enforcement efforts, leading to a violent escalation.

"In a shocking escalation of events, the vehicle’s conductor armed himself with a screwdriver and violently attacked a LASTMA officer, inflicting a stab wound during the altercation," Bakare-Oki stated. The injured officer was promptly taken to a hospital for emergency treatment and is reportedly responding well.

The driver of the commercial vehicle vehemently resisted lawful enforcement procedures.

The suspect, the bus conductor, was arrested by the Abattoir Police Division and is in custody for further investigation and potential prosecution. This incident follows a similar attack in recent months where another LASTMA officer was allegedly stabbed by a commercial bus driver, highlighting ongoing safety concerns for traffic officials on duty.

Bakare-Oki condemned the recurring attacks, emphasizing the Lagos State Government's zero-tolerance policy for assaults on officers performing their duties. He urged all road users to comply with traffic regulations and appealed to transport unions to educate their members on respecting law enforcement officers.
