Bus plunges into ravine in Cabo Verde, killing at least 25, including students

At least 25 people were killed when a bus plunged into a ravine on Cabo Verde’s Fogo island, in a tragedy that claimed the lives of many schoolchildren. The vehicle, carrying about 35 passengers, left the road late Saturday and fell roughly 30 meters into a canyon.

Most of the passengers reportedly died at the scene. Several others were injured, some seriously, according to José Canuto, head of civil protection for the city of São Filipe, who spoke to reporters.

Many of those aboard were primary and secondary school students, according to the national news agency Inforpress. The private outing had been organized by the bus driver, who also died in the crash.

President José Maria Pereira Neves expressed deep sorrow over the disaster. In a message posted on Facebook, he described it as “a major disaster” and offered his support to the victims’ families.

Authorities have launched an investigation into how the bus left the road. The exact cause of the crash remains unknown.
