Busan Commemorates 66th Anniversary of April 19th Revolution with Vigorous Events

Busan, a city with a proud history of democratic activism, is commemorating the 66th anniversary of the April 19th Revolution with a series of events that honor the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for democracy. The Hankyoreh reports on the main ceremony held at Central Park, where Mayor Park Heong-joon underscored Busan's pivotal role in the 1960 uprising. He stated, "The April 19th Revolution was the starting point where citizens corrected history with their own power and laid the foundation for democracy, and Busan was at its center." One such ceremony honored Shin Jeong-ryul, who was shot and killed by police at the age of 20 while protesting the rigged elections of March 15, 1960. Another event will commemorate Kang Su-young, who also died from police gunfire at 19 in Busan during the April 19th protests. The continued remembrance of these events, particularly the erection of a memorial tower for Kang Su-young at Gyeongnam Technical High School which has been designated a Busan Future Heritage, demonstrates the city's commitment to preserving the memory of the revolution and passing its democratic legacy to future generations.
