Buzău Becomes European Cultural Hub and Art Laboratory for One Month

Buzău, Romania, is set to become a vibrant European cultural hub and art laboratory for a month with the sixth edition of the Buzău International Arts Festival (BIAF). Running from August 14 to September 11, 2026, the festival aims to go beyond a typical event, transforming the city into a dynamic space for artistic creation and public engagement.

BIAF is designed to immerse audiences in a living cultural ecosystem. Art will spill out from traditional venues into streets, parks, and open-air cinemas, making the city itself a canvas. This year's festival is structured as a "festival of festivals," encompassing an international film competition (BUZZ IFF), an independent theater festival (COMIC 7 B), visual arts and photography programs, street art, literature, and activities for children.

Actor George Mihăiță, a celebrated figure in Romanian theater and film with over five decades of experience, will be the Romanian guest of honor. He will participate in a direct encounter with the public, moderated by Irina Margareta Nistor, embodying the festival's ethos of fostering close artist-audience connections. Mihăiță will also receive the BIAF 2026 Excellence Award. The festival will also host the second edition of the "Okay, so what is culture?" conference, featuring discussions with prominent cultural figures.

The festival's reach extends beyond the city, with the surrounding county serving as a cultural territory. Events will take place in over 10 locations, including Crâng Park and the "George Ciprian" Cultural and Performing Arts Center. BIAF's unique approach positions it as a significant European cultural event happening in Buzău, emphasizing real-time creation and audience participation.
