Romanian Tourism Sees Fewer Domestic Travelers, More Foreign Visitors

Romania's tourism sector is experiencing a split this year, with fewer Romanian travelers but a growing number of international visitors. While domestic overnight stays dropped by nearly 10% in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, foreign tourist numbers increased by 7.3%.

This shift means that foreign visitors now make up approximately 21% of all tourists staying in Romania, up from a smaller share previously. The overall number of arrivals in accommodation facilities fell by 4.1% to 5.56 million, primarily due to a 6.8% decrease in Romanian visitors. Despite the dip in domestic tourism, international arrivals are on the rise. North America saw the largest increase in visitors at 23.5%, followed by the European Union at 8% and other European countries at 7.1%. Asia was the only region to see a decline, with a 12.6% drop.
