BYD Replaces Seal 07 EV After Just Five Months Amidst Sales Slump

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is accelerating its product cycle with the introduction of a new Seal 07 model, a move that has raised eyebrows in the automotive industry. This rapid refresh comes merely five months after the launch of the current Seal 07, prompting questions about the company's strategy and its impact on consumers.

The previous iteration of the Seal 07, launched with significant expectations in early March 2024, failed to gain traction in the market. Data from China EV DataTracker indicates that it sold just 627 units in June. Instead of refining the existing model, BYD's response has been to replace it entirely with a redesigned version, a process that has already undergone homologation by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

This aggressive product turnover strategy has drawn criticism, with concerns that it could devalue vehicles quickly, erode consumer confidence, and create uncertainty regarding long-term parts and software support. The rapid pace mirrors that of technology companies rather than traditional automakers, leading to the question: "Will a BYD bought today be an old model in six months?"

Despite the controversy surrounding its release speed, the new BYD Seal 07 boasts significant upgrades. It adopts the maritime-inspired design language of the flagship Seal 08, featuring a sporty profile with slim LED daytime running lights and semi-flush door handles. A key technological advancement is the roof-integrated LiDAR sensor, supporting the DiPilot 5.0 driving system and Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) functions. The vehicle is larger than its predecessor, with a wheelbase extended by 85 mm and width increased by 50 mm. It will be offered in both fully electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) configurations, with electric versions producing between 329 and 408 horsepower.
