Caacupé: Priest urges faithful not to relegate faith amid life's challenges

In Caacupé, Paraguay, priest Agustín Martens delivered a homily emphasizing the enduring importance of faith in contemporary life. He urged attendees not to let the "accelerated pace of daily life, material concerns, and distractions" relegate faith, which he described as "the greatest treasure of human beings."

Martens likened faith to "a pearl of great value," a lifelong companion and integral part of the Paraguayan identity. He noted that devotion to the Virgin of Caacupé remains a spiritual richness for many, even those living far from home. "Faith is a treasure that cannot be relegated by the rhythm of life," he stated, drawing parallels to the Gospel parable.

The priest highlighted that faith cannot be measured by material standards, as some goods are irreplaceable by money. He observed that during difficult times, people discover true strength lies not in riches but in trust in God. Martens pointed out that while people often pursue material wealth, they realize in moments of crisis, like illness, family breakdown, or loss, that peace, comfort, and hope offered by faith are far more valuable.

Martens also addressed the role of families in passing on Christian values, crediting parents and grandparents for teaching past generations to pray and trust in God. He acknowledged that this transmission is increasingly challenging due to the fast pace of life, excessive activities, and constant use of technology, which reduce opportunities for dialogue.
