Cafe Bene Founder Sentenced to 3 Years for Nursing Home Fraud

Kim Sun-kwon, the founder of the popular South Korean coffee chain Cafe Bene, has been sentenced to three years in prison by the Seoul Central District Court. The court found him guilty of fraud, embezzlement, and breach of trust related to a scheme involving nursing home construction projects. Prosecutors accused Kim of aggressively expanding his nursing home business under companies like Amore Pati Silver Care, Amore Pati D&C, and Amore Pati Construction. He allegedly recruited investors by promising to cover remaining construction costs and loan interest if they paid initial land deposits and down payments, vowing to complete the facilities within a year. However, investigations revealed that Kim was concurrently building approximately 35 nursing homes nationwide, facing severe financial strain. Many existing projects had already missed their original completion dates. Furthermore, Kim was reportedly in a state of credit insolvency at the time, and his companies were not generating significant revenue, raising serious questions about the feasibility of his promises.
