Caiado calls it ‘unacceptable’ for PF operation to track STF justice: ‘A major crime’

Ronaldo Caiado described the tracking of a Supreme Federal Court justice through a Federal Police operation as “a major crime,” sharply escalating his criticism of the force.

The PSD presidential candidate made the comments Tuesday, the 8th, during a news conference in Campinas, São Paulo state. Caiado praised STF Justice André Mendonça for ordering the removal of Federal Police Director-General Andrei Rodrigues from office.

He called the episode another blow that Brazil’s institutions had managed to overcome and said it represented a serious offense against a Supreme Federal Court justice. Caiado also described the Federal Police’s conduct as “abhorrent,” while stressing that he was not condemning every member of the institution.

Caiado argued that the police should recover its ability to fight crime rather than “patrolling, threatening or wiretapping authorities” such as Mendonça. In the same context, he defended lifting secrecy from all investigations involving Banco Master, INSS and Dark Horse, and said voters should have access to investigations involving presidential candidates.
