Caiado names Ratinho Júnior as infrastructure minister in potential presidential victory

Ronaldo Caiado has already chosen his infrastructure minister, although he faces a steep climb to the presidency. The PSD presidential candidate announced that Paraná Governor Ratinho Júnior would take the post if Caiado wins this year’s election.

In a video released by Caiado’s campaign on Monday, the two politicians appeared together as Caiado made the invitation official. “He is a star. He will command all the highways, railways and waterways, and everything that follows,” Caiado said.

Ratinho Júnior thanked Caiado for the gesture. “It is a privilege to be by your side on this journey through Brazil. I am happy that you remembered my name,” he said. A Quaest poll from August put approval of the Paraná governor at 79%, while 14% disapproved of his administration.

The appointment would depend on a major reversal in the presidential race. A BTG/Nexus poll placed Caiado fourth with 5% of voting intentions, behind Lula with 41%, Flávio Bolsonaro with 33% and Augusto Cury with 11%.

The announcement also revives an earlier contest within the PSD. Ratinho Júnior and Caiado had competed for the party’s presidential nomination, while Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite had also been considered. PSD President Gilberto Kassab chose Caiado in March. This is Caiado’s second presidential campaign. He first ran in 1989 and finished tenth in the first round with 0.72% of the vote.
