Calgary Fire Department warns of lithium-ion battery fire risks after three incidents

Crews from the Calgary Fire Department responded to three separate fires within a 24-hour period, prompting an urgent warning about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries. The incidents highlighted the risks associated with charging and storing these power sources.

The first fire occurred in a garage where three electric scooters were being charged. Firefighters found smoke but no visible flames upon arrival. One occupant was treated for smoke inhalation. A subsequent fire at a commercial warehouse was traced to a compactor, where investigators believe lithium-ion batteries inadvertently left in discarded boxes ignited.

A third fire in a basement was also linked to an electric scooter being recharged. While occupants evacuated safely, a cat was rescued. The Calgary Fire Department is reminding residents to unplug batteries once fully charged, avoid unattended charging, and refrain from charging damaged batteries. They also advise following manufacturer instructions and proper disposal methods, keeping batteries out of regular waste carts.
