Calgary paddleboarder in critical condition after Bow River collision

Calgary emergency crews responded to a serious incident on the Bow River Thursday afternoon, where a paddleboarder was found face-down in the water and rushed to hospital in critical condition.

The collision occurred around 1:10 p.m. near the 85 Street bridge, just upstream from Bowness Park. The Calgary Fire Department's aquatic rescue team located the man still attached to his paddleboard leash. CPR was administered before paramedics took over and transported him to the Foothills Medical Centre.

Adding to the complexity of the rescue, the patient's 11-year-old son, who had floated downstream after the collision, was brought to shore by a bystander. The child was assessed by paramedics but reported no medical concerns.

This incident occurs amidst a concerning trend, as Calgary emergency responders report an increase in water rescue calls this summer compared to the previous year. In light of the risks, CFD is strongly recommending against the use of ankle leashes on moving water. They warn that the force of the current can pull users under, and entanglement poses a significant danger.
