Calgary police arson unit investigates suspicious vehicle fires in Northeast Calgary

The Calgary Police Service's arson unit is investigating a series of vehicle fires that erupted overnight in Northeast Calgary, leaving multiple vehicles extensively damaged.

Authorities responded to calls around 2 a.m. Friday after reports of multiple vehicles on fire in the 0-100 block of Cityline Common Northeast. Upon arrival, officers discovered five vehicles engulfed in flames.

I go out and look out the window and like three cars are just engulfed in flames.

Residents in the area described hearing more than a dozen explosions as the vehicles burned. Lak Sidhu, who was online shopping with his girlfriend, recounted hearing a bang before looking out the window to see three cars ablaze. Emrinder Singh stated that one of the vehicles exploded just meters from his home, describing the incident as unusual for his 10 years in Canada.

This is the first time happen. I’ve been in Canada 10 years and this is a weird thing I seen.

Global News has learned that the destroyed vehicles belonged to a courier company that had recently moved to Calgary from Regina approximately two weeks prior. The owner, who wished to remain unidentified, expressed devastation over the loss of half of his fleet.

Police are appealing to the public for any information, particularly any witnesses who observed unusual activity or have video footage of pedestrians or vehicles in the area between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. They urge anyone with information to contact the police or Crimestoppers.
