Cali Prepares for Abelardo De la Espriella's Presidential Inauguration

Cali, the capital of Colombia's Valle del Cauca department, is gearing up for the inauguration of President-elect Abelardo De la Espriella, scheduled for August 7, 2026. Mayor Alejandro Eder announced that the city will implement robust security measures to ensure a safe and tranquil ceremony.

Eder stated, “We are going to secure Cali and Valle del Cauca to guarantee a safe and completely tranquil inauguration.” This commitment was shared via X. To coordinate these efforts, the mayor met with the governor of Valle del Cauca, Dilian Francisca Toro, in a security council to define all necessary protection measures. Authorities confirmed the installation of a Unified Command Post (PMU) for continuous monitoring and coordination of the security plan.

The location for the ceremony remains unconfirmed, though local media reports suggest it may take place at the Universidad Santiago de Cali's auditorium, known as Arena USC. Following the inauguration, De la Espriella reportedly plans to hold a security council meeting at the Pichincha Battalion, located a short distance from the anticipated swearing-in site. He is expected to take the oath before members of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Initially, De la Espriella considered holding the ceremony at a military garrison in Popayán, the capital of the neighboring Cauca department. However, this idea faced criticism due to potential logistical and protocol challenges for senators, representatives, and international guests. The proposal also sparked controversy, with some interpreting it as suggesting civilian power is subordinate to military power. The president-elect later explained that the location change was necessitated by ash emissions from the Puracé volcano, near Popayán, which partially disrupted airport operations in that city, according to EFE.
