California Chemical Leak: Evacuation Zone Reduced After Cooling Efforts

Tens of thousands of residents in Orange County, California, can return home after authorities reduced the evacuation zone by 65% around a chemical leak. The incident, which began on May 21, involved a cracked tank at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove.

Officials announced on May 25 that the revised evacuation area now encompasses about 16,000 residents, a significant decrease from the initial 40,000. The primary concern was the potential for fire or explosion from the leaking tank containing methyl methacrylate (MMA), a chemical used in producing plastics.

Firefighters deployed a high-capacity water system, using millions of gallons to continuously cool the tank and prevent escalation. According to incident commander Craig Covey, one ground spray unit alone discharged over 4,700 liters per minute to maintain a safe temperature. The temperature inside the tank reportedly dropped from approximately 100 degrees Celsius on May 23 to about 93 degrees Celsius by the evening of May 25, well above the normal 50 degrees Celsius operating temperature.

While the most critical risks have been controlled, cleanup operations are ongoing. TJ McGovern, acting director of the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), stated that the "catastrophic and worst-case scenario has been controlled and eliminated." However, he stressed that the work is not finished. Authorities are monitoring the cooling trend, consulting chemical experts, and have tested the pressure release system, believing most of the chemical has solidified. Air quality monitoring is also in place, with the EPA reporting no breaches of safety thresholds.
