Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Visits Malaysia to Bolster 70 Years of Relations

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn is visiting Malaysia for a two-day official trip aimed at reinforcing the 70-year diplomatic relationship between the two nations. The visit, which began today, underscores the close and enduring ties between Cambodia and Malaysia.

Prak Sokhonn and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will co-chair the Third Meeting of the Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) between Malaysia and Cambodia in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

Prak Sokhonn is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. This meeting will provide an opportunity for both leaders to reaffirm their long-standing relationship and exchange views on shared interests. The Cambodian delegation will also co-chair the third Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) meeting with Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan in Kuala Lumpur.

The JCBC is the highest bilateral mechanism between Malaysia and Cambodia that provides a comprehensive platform to assess the overall bilateral relations and chart the direction of cooperation between the two countries.

This Third Meeting is organized after two decades since the Second JCBC meeting was held in Siem Reap in 2006.

Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Cambodia saw substantial growth last year, increasing by 27.4% to reach RM5 billion ($1.17 billion). Malaysian exports to Cambodia amounted to RM4.13 billion ($970 million), while imports from Cambodia were valued at RM0.88 billion ($200 million). Furthermore, Malaysia stands as the third-largest foreign investor in Cambodia, with accumulated investments totaling $3.20 billion (RM13.07 billion) across 162 registered projects as of 2024.

At the end of the Meeting, both Ministers are expected to sign the Agreed Minutes of the Third JCBC Meeting which will record the key outcomes of the Meeting and renew the joint commitment of Malaysia and Cambodia to continue strengthening bilateral cooperation.
