Cambridge professor resigns over plagiarism allegations

Jason Arday, who became the youngest Black professor in Cambridge University's history in 2023, has resigned from all his posts at the university and Jesus College following allegations of irregularities in his academic qualifications, honorary titles, and research.

The resignation came a day after the university announced a new investigation into inconsistencies in his academic record. Arday stated that his professorship at Cambridge was the greatest professional achievement of his life but that the "relentless public pursuit and personal attacks" had taken too high a toll. He clarified that his resignation does not signify an admission of guilt but is a measure to protect his mental health, family, and colleagues.

The controversy surrounding Arday includes accusations of plagiarism in his doctoral dissertation and several academic articles. It has since expanded to question the credibility of his biography, including his honorary professorships, visiting appointments at foreign universities, and charitable athletic feats. Doubts have been raised about his claim of completing 30 marathons in 35 days and running 960 kilometers in less than a week.

The university confirmed it is investigating multiple reports of alleged breaches of research ethics. Arday has acknowledged some of the allegations but maintains he is not a liar and believes he is the target of a racially motivated campaign. He suggested that a thorough review would reveal similar irregularities in the work of many other researchers. Arday announced his intention to return to research and teaching after a break.
