Cambridge's youngest Black professor found dead after plagiarism row and resignation

Jason Arday, who made history as Cambridge University's youngest Black professor, has died at his London home just a week after stepping down from his position. The 41-year-old was found by emergency services on Friday afternoon at a Battersea residence and was pronounced dead at the scene.

London's Metropolitan Police stated that Arday's death is being treated as "unexpected" but currently believe there are no suspicious circumstances. His passing follows a period of intense scrutiny regarding allegations of academic plagiarism. Arday had resigned from his post as professor of education sociology the previous week, asserting that his resignation should not be misinterpreted as an admission of the claims made against him.

Arday, who became Cambridge's youngest Black professor at the age of 37 in 2023, had spoken openly about overcoming challenges including dyslexia, developmental delays, and autism, which affected his ability to speak until age 11 and learn to read until his late teens. This year, however, his academic output came under fire, with accusations that parts of his doctoral thesis were identical or nearly identical to the work of other researchers. Questions were also raised about his academic credentials and past experiences.

While Arday consistently denied plagiarism, he acknowledged errors in his earlier academic writings. Cambridge University announced it would conduct an independent investigation into Arday's hiring and tenure following the emergence of new questions about his qualifications, even after initially stating that plagiarism accusations related to his doctoral thesis had been investigated by Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded the degree, and found to be unfounded. University Vice-Chancellor Deborah Prentice expressed profound grief upon hearing the news of his death.
