Cameroon climate observatory integrates climate concerns into land planning

Cameroon's National Observatory on Climate Change (ONACC) deployed technical expertise to Yoko between July 15-20, 2026. The mission focused on strengthening the scientific basis of the local sustainable land-use and development plan (PLADDT) within the Grand Mbam Integrated Landscape Management Project.

The ONACC teams updated land-use mapping, analyzed territorial evolution dynamics, and developed prospective scenarios. This work is crucial for identifying conservation areas and carbon-rich forests, essential for biodiversity preservation and climate change mitigation.

The intervention also aims to integrate geospatial indicators compatible with the Measurement, Notification, and Verification (MRV) system into the PLADDT. This will enhance the monitoring of landscape transformations and their environmental impacts. Ultimately, Yoko will benefit from a consolidated geospatial database, updated land-use maps, and decision-support tools for sustainable natural resource management.

Through this mission, ONACC reaffirms its role in providing scientific support to local authorities. It equips them with reliable data and analytical tools vital for planning that incorporates conservation imperatives, sustainable development, and climate change adaptation.
