Campervans offer freedom as more foreigners choose Kempen for camping

The Antwerp Kempen region in Belgium is experiencing a surge in popularity for camping, attracting an increasing number of foreign visitors. Campgrounds in the area now account for over half of all tourist accommodations in the region. Dutch tourists, in particular, are increasingly choosing the Kempen for their holidays. According to Toerisme Vlaanderen, campsites in the region offer 24,585 pitches, marking a 7.6% rise in the past three years. This growth places the Kempen second only to the coast in terms of tourist camping capacity. Many campsites report a rise in international guests, with Dutch visitors forming the largest group after Belgians, followed by Germans and Britons. Mireille Colson of Toerisme Provincie Antwerpen noted a general increase in overnight stays by foreign tourists, with nearly half originating from the Netherlands. She attributed this trend to the popularity of camping in neighboring countries, which benefits the Kempense campgrounds. Visitors like Stefan and Jeanette from Boxtel, Netherlands, are drawn to the area's peace and natural beauty. They appreciate the proximity to home, allowing for easy travel with their campervan, which they say offers a sense of freedom. George from Balen, who has been camping in Mol for ten years with his grandchildren, also values the convenience and the enjoyment his family derives from the camping experience. Even visitors from the United Kingdom are discovering the region. One camper, visiting for the first time, was drawn by the natural scenery after seeing the Zilvermeer on television during a cyclocross event. The tranquility and access to nature are key attractions for many who choose the Kempen for their outdoor getaways.
