Can Cats Eat Eggs? Vets Say Yes, but Only When Prepared Properly

A small amount of cooked egg can be offered to a cat, but less is more. Veterinary experts say eggs provide protein and fat, yet they should remain an occasional addition rather than a main source of nutrition.

Cats are obligate carnivores and need animal protein as the foundation of their diet. Egg white contains plenty of protein and little fat, while the yolk contains considerably more fat and calories. Feeding yolk too often can increase a cat's calorie intake and contribute to weight gain. Fatty meals can also cause digestive problems in sensitive cats and, in some cases, have been linked with pancreatitis.

Any egg given to a cat should be fully cooked. Boiled egg or scrambled egg can be suitable if prepared without salt, seasoning, butter or other additions. Raw eggs carry a risk of bacterial contamination, including salmonella, which can threaten both the animal and people in the household.

A small portion, such as about a tablespoon of cooked egg white, can be cooled and added to the cat's regular food. Kittens can also eat a small amount of fully cooked egg, but they especially need complete, nutritionally balanced food during growth. Eggshells contain calcium and other minerals, but owners should not add mineral supplements without veterinary advice.

Eggs are not necessary for cats already eating complete, high-quality commercial food. Owners should seek veterinary advice before introducing them if a cat has health problems, is overweight or follows a special diet.
