Canada clarifies visa and entry requirements for international visitors

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced updated travel frameworks to clearly define the documentation international visitors require for entry. These new guidelines categorize global travelers, specifying who can enter Canada visa-free, who needs an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), and who must obtain a traditional visa.

A select group of individuals are exempt from needing a traditional visitor visa or an eTA. This includes U.S. citizens, lawful U.S. permanent residents with a valid green card, and French citizens residing in and traveling directly from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Holders of diplomatic passports and commercial flight crews meeting specific operational criteria also fall under these exemptions.

For a broader range of nationalities, citizens can bypass traditional embassy visas if they travel by air and obtain an online eTA beforehand. Notably, these travelers do not require an electronic permit if they arrive by land or sea. This electronic travel framework applies to numerous countries, including Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and many European nations.

However, a conditional eTA is required for air travel only, and travelers must hold specific active foreign permits from countries such as Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Thailand, among others. These updated guidelines aim to streamline the entry process while maintaining security and clarity for international visitors.
