Canada hammers Qatar 6-0 in 2026 World Cup, nears knockout stage

Canada delivered a dominant performance, crushing Qatar 6-0 in their second Group B match of the 2026 World Cup at BC Place in Vancouver. Striker Jonathan David was the star of the match, scoring a hat-trick. Qatar's hopes were dashed as they finished the game with nine players after receiving two red cards.

This resounding victory places Canada in a strong position to advance to the round of 32. As one of the World Cup hosts, Canada needs just a draw against Switzerland in their next match to secure a spot in the knockout stage. Switzerland also secured a significant win in their previous game, defeating Bosnia Herzegovina 4-1. A draw between Canada and Switzerland would see both teams progress to the next round.

Playing in front of their home crowd of 52,497 supporters, Canada immediately took control of the game. Early chances fell to Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan, but Qatar's goalkeeper managed to make the saves. Canada's pressure paid off in the 16th minute when Cyle Larin scored the opening goal from a rebound after Jonathan David's shot was initially saved. David then doubled the lead in the 29th minute with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area. Qatar faced further trouble four minutes later when Homam Al Amin was initially shown a yellow card for a foul inside the box. However, after a VAR review, the penalty was rescinded as the foul occurred outside the box, but Al Amin's yellow card was upgraded to a direct red.

With a numerical advantage, Canada controlled the match with ease. Just before halftime, Jonathan David scored his second goal in the 45+3 minute, capitalizing on another rebound to give Canada a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
