Canada to Announce Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods Amid Trade Dispute

Canada is poised to announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States, escalating a trade dispute that has soured relations between the two neighbors. The move follows the breakdown of trade talks last week, which Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described as a sign that the U.S. sought to treat Canada as a subsidiary.

In response, Canada prepared its own retaliatory tariffs, scheduled to be effective September 8. Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and other ministers are expected to reveal the details of Canada's response on Tuesday.

This follows a previous instance where his administration had "renamed" the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, a change largely unacknowledged outside the U.S. government.

The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don't expect to doing much business with them any longer.

Canada relies heavily on the U.S. as its primary trading partner, with 70 percent of its exports destined for the American market. However, the U.S. also benefits significantly, with Canada being its second-largest trading partner in goods this year. No further negotiations are currently scheduled.
