Canada Unveils Ambitious AI Strategy to Create Jobs and Boost Economy

Canada is embarking on an ambitious national artificial intelligence strategy, dubbed "AI for Everyone," designed to accelerate economic growth, create jobs, and expand the use of AI technologies across various sectors. Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled the plan on Thursday, June 5, 2026.

The government's objective is to achieve an additional economic contribution of nearly C$200 billion (approximately $2.3 trillion) and generate 250,000 new AI-related jobs within the next five years. Canada views AI as a cornerstone of its economic competitiveness in an increasingly challenging global technology landscape. Currently, AI adoption among Canadian businesses hovers just above 12 percent; the new strategy aims to raise this figure to 60 percent by 2034.

To achieve these goals, Ottawa will implement a national AI literacy program to equip the public with foundational training, preparing them for the evolving job market. The government also plans to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in adopting AI to enhance productivity, support workers, and foster innovation. Key sectors targeted for this support include healthcare, energy, transportation, agriculture, manufacturing, robotics, and public services.

Beyond promoting AI utilization, Canada is committed to strengthening its computing infrastructure, which is fundamental for AI development. Plans include building a public AI supercomputer, expected to be among the most advanced globally, and investing in national computing centers and cloud services. These infrastructure developments will be aligned with clean energy initiatives, stringent environmental standards, and local economic benefits, signaling a significant national push towards leveraging AI for future economic prosperity.
