Canadian PM Carney to Address European Parliament Amid US Trade Crisis

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to address the European Parliament in Strasbourg on September 16. The address will coincide with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's State of the European Union speech.

Carney accepted the invitation from European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. During his visit, he will also hold meetings with members of the European Parliament to foster closer ties between Canada and the EU. This engagement comes at a critical time, particularly given the escalating trade crisis between Canada and the United States.

Since the formation of his Government, Prime Minister Carney has strengthened and expanded Canada's relationship with Europe. Last year, we established the ambitious New Future Strategic Partnership between the European Union (EU) and Canada; as well as the Security and Defence Partnership to deepen cooperation in trade, technology, energy and security.

Last year, Canada and the EU established the "Future Strategic Partnership," alongside a Security and Defence Partnership, aimed at deepening cooperation in key areas such as trade, technology, energy, and security.

These initiatives are designed to enhance Canada's opportunities in a changing global landscape, providing greater security, certainty, and long-term prosperity. Canada's pivot towards Europe is partly a response to increasing uncertainty in its relationship with Washington. Furthermore, Canada became the first non-European country to join the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative this year, granting its industry access to European military procurement programs valued in the billions of euros.
