Canadian Wildfire Claims Life, Forces 20,000 Evacuations

A devastating wildfire in British Columbia, Canada, has claimed at least one life and triggered mass evacuations, with over 20,000 residents forced to flee their homes. The Bald Range fire, which ignited Friday west of Okanagan Lake, exploded in size, covering about 50 square kilometers within its first three hours and expanding to 136 square kilometers by Sunday.

An 80-year-old woman died while attempting to evacuate her home in Meadow Valley near Summerland, according to local media reports. The entire town of Summerland, home to approximately 12,000 people in the agriculturally significant Okanagan Valley, was evacuated. Thousands more in nearby Peachland and other communities also had to leave their residences.

Across British Columbia, 21,700 people are under evacuation orders, with an additional 10,600 on alert. The province faces over a hundred active fires, about 70 of which started in the past week. The provincial government declared a state of emergency on Saturday to bolster response efforts, attributing the blazes to high temperatures and severe drought conditions in the southern interior.

Smoke from the fires is hampering aerial firefighting operations and causing flight cancellations at Kelowna Airport. Nationally, Canada is contending with 591 active wildfires, with the most significant concentrated in British Columbia. This year, Canada has recorded 4,265 wildfires, burning over 3.6 million hectares of forest.
