Cannes Premiere: 'The Dreamlike Adventure' Explores Bulgarian Town's Mafia and Patriarchal Struggles

German director Valeska Grisebach's latest film, 'L'Aventure rêvée' (The Dreamlike Adventure), has premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, offering a slow-burn immersion into the social realities of a small Bulgarian town. Similar to the works of Nuri Bilge Ceylan, the nearly three-hour film uses extended narration to draw viewers into its world.

Filmed in Svilengrad, a town in southern Bulgaria bordering Greece and Turkey, the movie marks Grisebach's return after nine years since her film 'Western'. The story begins with Saïd's return to the town for unclear, likely illicit, business. His car is stolen, forcing him to remain, where he reconnects with Veska, an archaeologist leading a local excavation.

The film initially immerses the audience in a narrative fog, leaving viewers uncertain of the director's intent or how the pervasive torpor will be broken. Saïd eventually vanishes from the plot, shifting the focus to Veska, portrayed by Yana Reda. Veska is depicted as a strong, determined woman who challenges the influence of a local mafia figure and the deeply entrenched patriarchal mindset of the community.

The film delves into themes of uncovering the past, both literally through archaeology and figuratively through the town's social fabric. It highlights the struggles of a woman resisting oppressive societal models in a region grappling with organized crime and traditional gender roles.
