Car models reach the end of the road

The automotive world is saying goodbye to several long-standing models as manufacturers shift focus. The Volkswagen Touran, a minivan launched in 2003, has rolled off the production line for the last time. Its discontinuation is attributed to an outdated platform and challenges in meeting new EU requirements, with approximately 2.3 million units produced.

Mercedes-Benz is also phasing out its B-Class, a higher hatchback/MPV, reportedly due to an increased focus on SUVs. "SUVs have killed the MPV market," stated Robert Lesnik, head of exterior design at Mercedes-Benz, in an interview with Autoexpress. The B-Class was first introduced in 2005.

Hyundai has stopped production of its gasoline-powered i10, once dubbed "Sweden's cheapest car." This move aligns with the company's increased focus on electric vehicles. Similarly, Audi has ceased production of the three-door hatchback Audi A1, launched in 2010 and produced in nearly 1.4 million units, along with the Q2 crossover SUV. Audi is now concentrating on new electric models, including a potential A2 replacement.

Ford is retiring the Focus, a model introduced in 1998/1999 that became one of the world's best-selling cars, with over 12 million units sold. The decision to discontinue the Focus, like others, is driven by the market's growing preference for SUVs and electric vehicles.
