Careful Touch on Historic Structure: City Library Renovated

The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has concluded its meticulous maintenance and repair work on the Kent Library, a landmark building in the city. The project prioritized the preservation of the structure's historical character, ensuring that its unique architectural fabric remains intact.

During the renovation, the wooden shutters on the building's facade underwent detailed inspection and restoration. Damaged or decayed wooden parts were replaced, and all surfaces were sanded before the shutters were repainted in a walnut color and reinstalled. Beyond the wooden elements, the library's stone and metal features also received attention. Imitation work was carried out on stone decorative elements, and the hinges of the shutters were reinforced using a special epoxy application to address loosening caused by time.

The Kent Library, formerly the Anadolu Club, was restored and converted into a library in 2008. The recent maintenance efforts have not only preserved its historical authenticity but also improved its structural durability. The work was conducted by the maintenance and repair teams of the Historical Structures Branch Directorate, under the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality's Department of Kent History Promotion and Tourism.

This initiative underscores the municipality's commitment to safeguarding its historical assets while adapting them for contemporary use. By carefully balancing restoration with necessary repairs, the city ensures that its significant buildings continue to serve the community effectively and stand as testaments to its rich history.
