Caregiver Sentenced for Embezzling 20 Million Won from Dementia Patient

A 70-year-old caregiver has received a suspended prison sentence for stealing approximately 20 million won (about $14,300 USD) from a dementia patient under her care. The Cheongju District Court handed down a sentence of two years and six months in prison, suspended for four years, on charges including violations of the Specialized Credit Finance Business Act.

The caregiver allegedly used the patient's check card to make withdrawals on over 80 occasions between March 4 and April 5, 2024. Investigations revealed that on March 4, the caregiver took the patient to the bank to close their account, shortly after learning that the patient was scheduled to enter a nursing home. Following the account closure, the caregiver obtained a new check card in the patient's name.

In its ruling, the court acknowledged that the defendant exploited the patient's severe dementia and impending move to a nursing home to gain financial benefit. However, the court also took into account several mitigating factors. These included the defendant's age, her relationship with the victim, the motive behind the crime, circumstances after the offense, and the fact that she had no previous convictions for similar offenses.

This case highlights the vulnerability of elderly individuals, particularly those with cognitive impairments, and the potential for abuse by those entrusted with their care. The court's decision reflects a balance between punishment for the crime and consideration of the defendant's personal circumstances.
