Carlos Comesaña, pioneering Argentine mountaineer, dies at 86

The mountaineering community mourns the loss of Carlos Evaristo Comesaña, a towering figure in Argentine adventure sports, who passed away at 86. Comesaña was celebrated not only for his numerous ascents but also for his pioneering spirit and enduring passion for the mountains.

He is best remembered for his historic 1965 achievement alongside José Luis Fonrouge: becoming the first Argentines to conquer the formidable Cerro Fitz Roy. Their ascent via the Supercanaleta route was a testament to their skill and daring, employing a minimalist alpine style that was ahead of its time. This expedition, undertaken with basic equipment, involved a grueling 70 hours on the wall, a feat that cemented their place in mountaineering history.
