Carlos Pereira Launches Mayoral Bid in Encarnación

Liberal deputy Carlos Pereira officially launched his bid for mayor of Encarnación on June 14, 2026, seeking to maintain opposition leadership in the city for another term. His candidacy is supported by a broad coalition of opposition parties and movements, aiming to secure victory in the municipal elections scheduled for October 4.

During a large political rally, Pereira, the brother of Itapuá Governor Javier Pereira, presented his platform alongside twelve council candidates from the opposition alliance. The event was attended by prominent national opposition leaders, including the president of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA), Alcides Riveros, and governors from Central and Itapúa. Senators and deputies from various parties also showed their support, emphasizing national unity to achieve electoral goals.

Alcides Riveros of the PLRA affirmed that Pereira is the best choice for Encarnación, pledging institutional support from the liberal party. "We will work together to achieve victory and build the real alternation that Paraguay needs," Riveros stated, highlighting the importance of unity for winning mayoral positions and preparing for the 2028 general elections.

The opposition leaders view the coalition's coordinated effort in Encarnación as a replicable model for other districts. Their objective is to forge broad agreements among parties and movements to present a competitive and capable alternative to the electorate. Pereira will compete against Sebastián Remezowski, a fellow deputy from the ruling Colorado Party, who secured a decisive victory in his party's primaries on June 7.
