Carlos Pereira says Encarnación must choose between moving forward and returning to the past

Encarnación faces a choice between moving toward the future and returning to the past, opposition mayoral candidate Carlos Pereira said ahead of the October 4 election.

Pereira, a Liberal Party lawmaker running for the opposition alliance, said his political team wants to strengthen the opposition’s stronghold in the city. He argued that keeping power in opposition hands would help sustain Encarnación’s growth and modernization.

The candidate said the city should remain safe for tourists, but stressed that its residents’ basic needs must receive equal attention. “We are people who represent the people, I represent a great alliance of nine political parties. The objective is for Encarnación to remain the most beautiful city in Paraguay,” Pereira said.

He also accused the Colorado Party of using resources from the Yacyretá Binational Entity and other public institutions for campaigning. Pereira urged voters to recognize what he described as a tactic that appears only during election periods and cannot be sustained over time.

The opposition, he said, is coordinating its efforts to face the Colorado Party, cover all polling stations and prevent possible fraud. Pereira also expressed confidence in Liberal Party leader Alcides Riveros and his ability to pursue a broad alliance for the 2028 elections.
