Casablanca Finalizes Waste Treatment Center Project

Casablanca is moving into the final stages of developing a substantial waste treatment and landfill center in the Majatya Oulad Taleb commune, located in the Mediouna province. The project, a major undertaking for the region, involves a partnership between the Casablanca commune, the Ministry of Interior represented by the Casablanca-Settat regional government, and a consortium including Kanadevia Inova, Nareva, and Itochu. An agreement was signed on Monday to officially launch the initiative. Construction is slated to commence in October, with all parties committed to providing their allocated budgets. Moulay Ahmed Affilal, the vice president of the Casablanca commune responsible for sanitation and the project supervisor, affirmed that financial obstacles will not impede the project's progress, stating that the necessary funds will be available. However, Affilal declined to comment further on the project, noting his absence from the agreement signing and a lack of detailed knowledge about the finalized terms. The management contract for the center spans 33.5 years and carries an estimated financial cost of approximately 150 million dirhams. The facility itself will occupy 243 hectares in the Douar Lahfari Marshich area. Its primary objectives include the energy recovery from approximately 1.49 million tons of household and similar waste annually, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, and generating renewable energy. The project aims for a 72% recovery rate and a 24% landfilling rate within the contract's duration.
