The incident occurred in the 33rd minute when Casemiro, positioned as the last outfield player, attempted a pass from the back. His supporting foot slipped, causing him to fall and lose possession directly to Columbus Crew's Hugo Picard. Picard quickly initiated an attack, passing to Daniel Gazdag, who then found Taha Habroune. Habroune sent a low cross into the box, aiming for Jamiro Monteiro Thiaré.

Casemiro, racing back to rectify his mistake, managed to intercept the pass. However, his attempt to clear the ball tragically backfired as he deflected it into his own net, surprising goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo and leveling the score at 1-1. This sequence saw the former Real Madrid player involved in both decisive errors that led to the goal.

Inter Miami had initially taken the lead through Luis Suárez in the 16th minute, and Noah Allen restored their advantage before halftime. Columbus Crew secured the draw with a late goal from Brais Méndez in the 84th minute.
