Cat and Kittens Rescued from Storm Drain in Zagreb

A dramatic rescue operation unfolded in Zagreb when a family heard distressed meowing coming from an underground storm drain. Upon investigation, they discovered a mother cat with two kittens trapped inside the shaft.

Rescuers from the Dumovec Animal Shelter were immediately called to the scene. Mario, a field service colleague, responded quickly and successfully extracted the feline family from the drain. It remains unclear whether the mother cat gave birth inside the drain or brought her kittens there for shelter. Fortunately, the incident occurred during a dry period, as heavy rain could have led to a much more dangerous situation for the animals.

It was clear that the cat family needed help. They called us. Mario, our field service colleague, rushed to the intervention. As soon as he took the animals out of the drain, the cat took the kittens to another place.

The shelter shared photos of the mother and her kittens, noting that this was one of several unusual interventions they have handled recently. In another case, they rescued a weak and dehydrated badger found at the Police Academy, transporting it to the Zoological Garden's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

Dumovec rescuers also intervened when a dog entered a ZET bus and refused to leave, requiring assistance from both the shelter and the police. It was later discovered that the dog was accustomed to wandering off on its own adventures. These varied calls highlight the shelter's role in responding to a wide range of animal welfare issues within the city.
